Biography

Dr. Wang received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada, in January 2010. Before he completed his Ph.D., he was an Internship Researcher at ABB Switzerland Corporate Research Center, Baden-Dattwil, Switzerland. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of British Columbia from February 2010 to July 2010. In August 2010, he joined ABB Sweden Corporate Research Center, Västerås, Sweden, as a Scientist and then a Senior Scientist. From July 2014, he joined School of Engineering, the University of British Columbia, Kelowna, BC, Canada as an Assistant Professor and then an Associate Professor. He served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion (TEC) and IEEE Power Engineering Letters. He was also the Chair of IEEE Task Force on Interfacing Techniques for Simulation Tools from 2019 to 2022. Dr. Wang established his research lab “Flexible Power Transmission Laboratory for Renewable Energy Integration” in UBC Okanagan Campus. The laboratory received $305,000 CAD funding from Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and BC Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF) in 2017 and NSERC RTI grant of $150,000 CAD in 2021 to acquire the-state-of-the-art lab equipment. The lab equipment and infrastructure include real-time power system/electronics simulators from OPAL-RT, modular multilevel converter test-bench, induction machine drives, measurement and data acquisition systems (TEK oscilloscopes, high voltage, high current probes). He received Teaching Excellence Award 2017/2018 from the School of Engineering, UBCO. His Ph.D. students received  two Best Paper Awards from the 10th IEEE Annual Information Technology, Electronics, and Mobile Communication Conference, (IEEE IEMCON 2019) and the 47th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (IEEE PVSC47 2020) and one Best Paper Award Finalist from the 2022 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference (EPEC 2022). His Master and Ph.D. students have received several prestigious scholarships such as NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowships, NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship, NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship – Masters, NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards.
